Folded silk scarves stacked on a travertine ledge

The Atelier

Every design begins on paper at full size, 110 centimetres square, drawn by hand before a single colour is separated.

Separation is where a drawing becomes a print. Each colour is pulled apart into its own screen, and a design carrying fourteen of them takes fourteen passes, in register, in order. It is the slowest part of the work and the part that decides whether the print reads as drawn or as copied.

The edge is finished by hand. A weighted edge is what makes a square fall properly instead of floating, and it is the first thing anyone who knows scarves will check.
